Home Charging our Tesla’s

Tom StolzeApril 15, 2021

So now my research has changed gears. How on earth am I going to charge not one, but two Tesla Model 3’s at our home?
Tesla’s come with what they call a Mobile Charger, and include an adapter for a typical US 120 volt 15 amp outlet, the Mobile Charger can also be paired with optional plugs, either 120 volts or 240 volts. This offers maximum flexibility and various charging rates, I have included an image below showing adapter availability as well as the approximate miles of range gained per hour for each adapter used with the Mobile Charger.

Available NEMA Adapters from Tesla

Tesla also offers fixed home chargers, these are an additional $500 as of this posting, and if hard wired, can charge at a faster rate than the include Mobile Charger. Believe it or not, I can be cheap, I will spend money when I think it’s worth it, but we take every chance we get to save a dime, and in this case it would be nearly $1000 by using the included chargers. I have also decided that 240 volts is our route to charge, this will allow up to 32 miles of charge per hour to be put back into the battery, and charging at 240 volts is more efficient than charging at 120 volts, and since I’m writing this after the fact for one of our cars, I can tell you the 240 volt is running around 93% efficient, I believe the 120 is in the mid to low 80% range. Once again, I’m cheap, I want to get every mile I can out of the electric we will be paying for to charge our Tesla’s.
So the decision is made, a 100 amp sub-panel will be installed in the garage along with two 14-50 outlets that will allow us to both charge at the same time and add 32 miles of charge to each battery an hour. It is an easy purchase for the NEMA 14-50 Adapters from the Tesla website, many times you can pick these up at the Service Center, but during my research it seems these can be in short supply at times, so if you know ahead of time, get your adapter(s) on order.
